All modern vehicles now have a CANbus computer network running through the vehicle.

A CANbus system  is basically the nervous system of the vehicle

Modern vehicles use a CAN Bus to transfer information between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and various electronic automotive systems.

This high-speed communication network can provide a wide range of real-time on-board diagnostic data that can be used to reduce vehicle running costs, improve driver safety, streamline maintenance processes and support environmental responsibility.

What information is obtained from the CAN bus

Although the data obtained depends on the CAN Bus standard, we can get the following:

  • Fuel tank level displayed on dash

  • Engine temperature

  • Total fuel consumption

  • Revolutions per minute

  • Current state of ignition

  • Engine hours

  • Throttle position

  • Engine load

  • Speeding

  • Instantaneous speed

  • Speed – average trip speed, time spent in speed bands

  • Driving time

  • Maintenance due

  • Harsh braking

  • Excessive RPM

  • PTO (Power Take Off) use

  • Distance – odometer reading

  • C02 Emissions

  • Fuel Theft

  • Vehicle fault codes
